During the mid- to late-1800s, New York City's most impoverished neighborhoods were plagued by violent gang conflicts. Among these, The Five Points in lower Manhattan stood out as the epitome of squalor and despair—a slum characterized by rampant disease, moral decay, and extreme poverty.

Within its confines, infamous (or notorious) gangs held dominion over the streets, earning The Five Points a lasting legacy in the annals of urban history.

THE DEAD RABBITS

The Dead Rabbits, a notorious Irish immigrant street gang, found themselves locked in bitter enmity with the nativist anti-immigrant faction known as the Bowery Boys. This deep-seated hostility culminated in a historic riot that engulfed the streets for several days in 1857.

Nearly a thousand gang members were embroiled in the chaos before order was eventually reinstated. Among them, John Morrissey stood out as the leader of the Dead Rabbits, a notorious figure whose trajectory would later see him ascend to the ranks of Democratic congressman and senator.
